GAJALAXMI PUJA, DHENKANAL

GajaLaxmi Puja in Dhenkanal enjoys a special place in the cultural map of Odisha. Every year this festival begins form KUMAR PURNIMA and continues for eleven days. This is the longest festival of the district. This grand festival started in the year- 1923 at Kunjasahu Chawk. Now known as Genesh Bazar. However gradually the puja pratistans mushroomed and now 36 puja pratistans observe Gajalaxmi Puja. Speciality of this festival is that, it starts from college road to Korian Chawk almost 7 kms. The visitors have darshan of all the Puja Medhas situated on the road sides. It attracts crowd from all over Odisha.

MaghaMella  at Joranda

Magha Mella at Joranda is the most famous festival of ‘Mahima Dharma’ . Every year it begins on ‘Magha Purnima’ & continues for four days at Joronda. Mahima Sanyasis & devotees from different parts of the country come ot Joronda- the epicenter of ‘Mahima Dharma’. It is an occasion for the believers who celebrate it as ‘ Guru Purnima or Prabhu Purnima’ with gigentic composite lamps enlightening the whole temple complex.

Ratha Yatra, DHENKANAL

The Ratha yatra is celebrated in Dhenkanal town with great charisma & grandeur. The idols from Lord Balaram Temple are taken on “Pahandi” to a couples. of chariots. The ladies pull the smaller chariot ‘The Debadalana. The car festival spans the entire main market from Rathagada to Mausima Mandir i.e. Gundichaghar at Baji Chouck. The kings of Dhenkanal have been performing rituals on  Ratha Yatra since historic days.

Bullock Festival, Bhuban 

Bullock festival of Bhuban has a special identity. Bullock is the most ancient means of transport and communication. In the olden days, the merchants specially the ‘Thorias’ or the salt merchants used bullocks to carry their loads. They were travelling different business points of India with this beast of burden. In order to commemorate the old heritage and to realize the importance of bullock in rural economy and agrarian society, the Bullock festival is held every year during the Dashera at Bhuban.

JAGAR YATRA, KAPILAS

Kapilash is the abode of Lord Chandrasekhar & one of the famous tourist spots of Odisha.Every year during Mahasiva Ratri ‘Jagar Yatra’ is being observed. Devotees come from different corners of Odisha as well as India, by climbing 1352 steps or by walking through the ‘Barabanki’. They worship Chandra Shekhar with devotion & austerity. After ‘ Shodasa Upachar’ the “Moha Deepa” ascends to the pinnacle of the temple. The District administration makes minute arrangements for the convenience, security & comfort of atleast 5 lacs of people who enkindle the lamps through out the night under the starcast dark curtain of the night sky.
